Torrential Rains Lash North India (Social media)

National News: The monsoon has intensified across North India, unleashing widespread destruction from the hills to the lowlands. While Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are grappling with landslides and flash floods, Uttar Pradesh is facing severe waterlogging and rising Ganga water levels, triggering alarm across the state.

Himachal: Roads Cut Off, Lives Lost

The situation in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh is especially dire. Over 235 roads have been rendered impassable, with 176 of them in Mandi alone. Additionally, 174 drinking water supply schemes have been disrupted, exacerbating the water crisis in rural areas.

According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 80 people have lost their lives so far. Out of these, 52 deaths are attributed to natural calamities like flash floods, landslides, and cloudbursts, while 28 people have died in road accidents.

In the Thunag, Karsog, and Gohar regions of Mandi, 28 people are still missing. Teams from the NDRF, Indian Army, ITBP, and Home Guards are actively engaged in search and rescue efforts across the affected regions. To reconnect isolated villages, the district administration has begun construction of Bailey bridges.

Uttarakhand: Mountains Soaked, Plains Sweltering

Uttarakhand’s hilly districts like Bageshwar, Chamoli, and Tehri have received above-average rainfall, with Bageshwar recording 765 mm so far. In contrast, lowland districts like Udham Singh Nagar are witnessing high temperatures and humidity due to deficient rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Nainital, Bageshwar, Rudraprayag, and Champawat between July 8 and 10, warning of wind speeds reaching up to 50 km/h.

Landslides have blocked multiple roads, while a dangerous pothole on the Shipra River bridge in Bhawali has raised safety concerns among locals demanding immediate repairs.

Uttar Pradesh: Ganga Rising, Cities Drowning

Heavy rainfall has led to flood-like conditions in several parts of Uttar Pradesh. In Moradabad’s Bholanath Colony, waist-deep floodwaters have submerged around 15–20 homes, leaving residents no choice but to wade through waterlogged streets.

In Varanasi, the Ganga River has swelled to 62.63 meters, just 8.63 meters below the danger mark. The rising waters have inundated over 100 temples between Assi and Rajghat, and cremations are now being performed on the steps of Manikarnika Ghat.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued rain alerts for 44 districts in Uttar Pradesh, warning of heavy rainfall in 13 districts and thunderstorm activity with lightning in the remaining regions.

Vigilance Is the Key to Survival

North India is currently enduring a severe onslaught of nature's wrath. Timely action by authorities and citizens alike is crucial to preventing further damage. While governments are responding with urgency, public awareness and preparedness remain equally essential, as the monsoon shows no signs of retreat.
